UN-Habitat/LaCoMoFa Youth Photography Competition 2021

UN-Habitat and the Laboratory of Architecture and Environmental Design (LaCoMoFa) of Biskra University invite young photographers and students from all over the world to submit images documenting their communities’ contributions to improving the quality of life in  cities and highlighting the connections between urban and rural areas and the links between cities and their regions.

We invite photographers across the globe to engage creatively with the topic “valuing our communities, cities and regions” and to submit their photographs by 31st March 2021.

This is basically to improving the quality of life in cities and highlighting the connections between urban and rural areas and the links between cities and their regions.

Requirements

  • Participation is free of charge.
  • Participants must be between 18-35 to qualify as a participant.
  • The participant declares that she/he is the author of the photographs and the owner of their copyright and of the right to use the image.
  • By submitting an image, the participant gives LaCoMoFa and UN-Habitat the right to share your image on social media, future publications (hardcopies) and the website competition.
  • LaCoMoFa and UN-Habitat takes no responsibility for infringement of 3rd party rights. The submitter of the photograph will incur any and all penalties associated with infringing on a 3rd Party’s rights to the photo.
  • LaCoMoFa and UN-Habitat reserves the right to cancel or modify the contest at its discretion.

Instructions to Participants

  • Based on the World Cities Day 2020 Key Messages on Valuing our Communities and Cities, the photo competition has five thematic categories open for photos submissions.
  • Participants can enter in one of the five thematic areas. Some examples for potential subjects that exemplify the thematic category are provided below (see Annex).
  • Participants are allowed five entries (maximum five photos are expected per submission, therefore up to 5 photos if submitting five entries).
  • Share with us the story behind your photo. Submitted photos should be accompanied with a caption of no more than 100 words (English, French or Spanish). Please consider the following guiding questions for your caption:
    • How this photo reflects the community contribution to the city and region social-cultural values, economic values, environmental values, innovation values and/or communities’ actions in cities and regions?
    • How the communities and/or places in this photo are connected to surrounding regions and nearby rural communities and areas?
    • How the communities and/or places in this photo are fundamental to local and community responses in the face of social-cultural, environmental and economic challenges (e.g. Covid-19, climate and inequality).
  • Specify the thematic entry and state the location and date of where and when the photograph was taken.
  • Participants from all over the world are encouraged.
  • Images should be submitted in JPEG or TIFF in high resolution (900 px wide, 72 dpi).
  • Participant will receive an email confirming reception.

Selection Process

  • All submitted images will be displayed on UN-Habitat Policy, Legislation and Governance Section social media and LaCoMoFa social media for public voting (April, 2021).
  • Photo entries should be judged based on composition, technical excellence, originality, responsiveness to the theme, and overall impact.
  • Five images will be selected as the overall winning piece (one image per thematic category). 
  • Winners will be selected based on public voting results and by a joint jury composed by members of the Dept of Architecture-LaCoMoFa/Biskra University and UN-Habitat.
  • Top five winners (one per thematic) will receive an award certificate from the organizer partners.
  • Winning and selected photos will be presented in an online public exhibition on both UNHabitat and LaCoMoFA social media (see above) and digital platforms (UN-Habitat Urban Policy Platform).
  • Winning and selected photos will be featured in upcoming publications of UN-Habitat and LaCoMoFa. Photo authors will receive full acknowledgement in the publication.

Method of Application

  • Send a high-resolution photo (s) and the story behind it to unhabitat-url@un.org and cc lacomofa@univ-biskra.dz together with your full name and contact information. Use the email subject line “Valuing our communities photo competition”.
