The primary objective of the fellowship is to provide high-quality training, exchange of knowledge and experience, and opportunities to strengthen communications on issues of mutual interest. Candidates will have the opportunity to hear from talented professionals, learn about their ideas, investigate how things can be dealt with, and understand how they can apply newly acquired abilities and knowledge.
Duration of the Fellowship
- Program Length: The Fellowship must be between a minimum of 2 weeks and a maximum of 52 weeks.
- In-Australia Requirement: At least 2 weeks of the Fellowship activities must take place in Australia.
- Partner Country Activities: Activities in the partner country must commence within 4 months of completing the Fellowship activities in Australia.

Benefits
- Maximum Funding: The maximum funding available per Fellow is $34,500.
- Travel (including return airfare to Australia and in-country travel).

- Program overhead fee (up to 10% of DFAT funds, capped at $25,000).

Eligibility
- Candidates must be residents of an eligible country.
- Applicants must not be permanent residents of Australia.
- The candidate must be at least 18 years old.
- Candidates must be physically capable of participating in the Fellowship.
- They must not be active-duty members of the military.
- Candidates must meet all Department of Home Affairs requirements for student visas subclass 500.
- Applicants must be proficient in the English language.
- Because DFAT will only fund and provide visa support letters for individual Fellows, not their family members, all applicants must be able to travel without family members.

- South Asia and Middle East: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iraq, Jordan, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Occupied Palestinian Territories and Sri Lanka
- Pacific: Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and Wallis and Futuna
- Africa: Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe
- Caribbean: Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname
- Europe: Ukraine
