Carlos Alberto Montaner Journalism Prize 2024

Applications are open for the Carlos Alberto Montaner Journalism Prize 2024. The award seeks to recognize and promote the new values ​​of Ibero-American journalism. It is endowed with 10,000 US dollars and will highlight excellence, journalistic rigor, ethical consistency and the defense of freedom in the exercise of journalism.

The award is named after the journalist and thinker Carlos Alberto Montaner, who was twice president of the jury, as well as one of the most influential figures in the defense of freedom in Spanish.

The following categories will be admitted:

  • Chronicle: Reports that, using persuasive prose along with the formal resources of literature, relate real events in a neat and detailed manner.
  • Opinion – essay: Journalistic pieces that, through an argumentative structure, support the author’s opinion about a topic.
  • Journalistic investigation: In-depth reports that reveal news events that are hidden from public opinion.

Award

  • The IV “Carlos Alberto Montaner” Journalism Prize is endowed with US$10,000 US dollars, to which the corresponding tax withholding will be applied. The winner of the $10,000 USD of this fourth prize will be announced at the America-Europe International Forum, organized in November by the International Foundation for Freedom (FIL).
  • Additionally, the winner will be invited, with all expenses paid, to deliver a speech on the winning topic at the annual meeting of the Atlas Network Latin American Forum, which will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in February 2025.

Eligibility

  • Journalists under 35 years of age of any origin may participate, with the number of works they deem appropriate.
  • The IV “Carlos Alberto Montaner” Journalism Prize will be allocated to works in original Spanish published in the written, radio, television and digital press during the year prior to the closing of the call, that is, from Saturday, October 14, 2023 to Friday, October 11, 2024. Translations of original works in another language will not be accepted.

Application

The works must be sent in PDF format (in the case of written journalism) or in a YouTube link through the management computer platform. Participants must register in order to send the article.
