Henrike Grohs Art Award 2024 for Visual Artists

Applications are open for the Henrike Grohs Art Award 2024. Conceived in honour of the late Henrike Grohs – a dedicated promoter of contemporary art in Africa – the prize aims to support outstanding artistic practices and contributes to cultural dialogue on the African continent. Since its inauguration in 2018, the prize has established itself as an outstanding opportunity to promote exceptional African contemporary art practice.

Henrike Grohs studied ethnology and was Head of the Goethe-Institut in Abidjan from 2013 – 2016. She co-founded the project Next – Intercultural Projects at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. Between 2002 and 2009, she worked as Project Manager in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra’s Education programme. In 2009, she was appointed Advisor on Culture and Development at the Goethe-Institut in South Africa. Henrike Grohs passed away in a terrorist attack in Côte d’Ivoire in March 2016 along with seventeen other people. She was 51 at the time.

Award

  • The winning individual artist or collective will receive a cash prize of €20,000 and €10,000 towards the production of a publication on their work.
  • Two artists or collectives will be selected as runners up and will be awarded a cash prize of €5,000 each.

Eligibility

  • Contemporary visual artists from various disciplines living and working on the African continent are eligible to apply.

Application

To complete the application form, note that you will need to upload a PDF portfolio including the following:

  • Artist bio (200 words max) – Artist statement about your work (750 words max)
  • A maximum of 3 recent bodies of work, consisting of at least 5 works of art each.
  • You can only upload 1 file, maximum 10MB.
