The African Center of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), based at Redeemer’s University, Nigeria, is focused on driving innovation in viral genomics research, outbreak response, diagnostic development, and capacity building. Established in 2013 and supported by the World Bank and the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) H3Africa consortium, among other funders, the ACEGID platform is building genomics pipelines, advancing our understanding of microbial threats, and training the next generation of African scientists how to identify, manage and control these threats. ACEGID is built upon strong collaborations forged across West Africa (Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone) and beyond (United States, United Kingdom) allowing for increased reach and scalability of its innovations.
Position Description:
We are seeking a highly motivated and organised Scientific Communications Officer to ensure that the ACEGID has a strong public and expert image, enabling people to understand our research and scientific services through a variety of media.
As a Scientific Communications Officer, you will write and edit materials based on scientific projects from ACEGID for a variety of media such as web content, social media, flyers and reports. In addition, you will be responsible for sourcing, writing and editing website content, including news stories, and should have a good sense of what makes a story newsworthy. In addition, you will manage our social media accounts, with a particular focus on Twitter and Instagram, and produce promotional print materials to promote our activities and scientific highlights. You should enjoy writing and be capable of turning complex scientific information and practices into clear, concise and attractive language, with the ability to tailor your writing to your audience (e.g. scientific community or the general public).
Main duties / key responsibilities:
– Research, write and distribute information about our scientific work/discoveries and services
– Identify and write content for ACEGID’s web page.
– Assist with the promotion and organisation of ACEGID’s outreach events
– Produce and manage the social media sites
– Contribute to the development of ACEGID’s communications strategy
– Liaise with scientists to gather information and organise content for public engagement
– Work with the science communications team
Requirements
Essential:
– Degree in life sciences
– Experience communicating complex scientific ideas to different target audiences
– Experience maintaining social media feeds and creating/editing websites
– Strong writing and editorial skills, with great accuracy and attention to detail
– Strong organisational and interpersonal skills
– Ability to work independently
– Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
Desirable:
– Qualification in science communication or science media production
– Experience in communications or media work
– Experience in biological science research
– Experience in SEO and WordPress
Working relationships
You will be part of the communications team which consists of two communications officers and a graphic designer and will help each other where needed with the science communication initiatives. You will report directly to the Director of Science Communication.
